Why does this app deserve a Happy Face? Licking Letters - Tenlin Studios, LLC

lickinglettersLicking Letters is an app that will introduce your child to the alphabets and spelling words with them. The app is simple enough that will not need a rocket-scientist to figure out. Most of all, the fun factor is enough to keep your children learning and entertained at the same time. Licking Letters has a couple of characters, there is Hoppy, the main character and then there is the alligator. Your objective is to control Hoppy by tapping him and he will stick his tongue to touch the letters and if it is correct, it will float into the correct space above. As for the alligator, it is not really the bad guy; you just have to get the coins before it does in the bonus stages. Here is where Leapin’ Loot comes in; with it, you can dress up Hoppy in different funny costumes by using it to make trades for different article of clothing inside the app. Unlike in-app purchases, this is a little extra fun that lets your child express some of their creative skills.

With the excitement of dressing up Hoppy in fun costumes and learning how to spell at the same time, this is surely an app worth getting for your child. Licking Letters by Tenlin Studios LLC.

Why does this app deserve a Happy Face?  iWriteWords (Handwriting Game) - gdiplus

iWriteWordsiWriteWords is an app that will pronounce and lets you practice writing each alphabet and number. By taking advantage of the drawing capability of the iPad and iPhone, now your child can learn how to write the ABCs and 123s on this new educational app. By using a tracing method, your child can learn the fundamentals of 123 and be able to practice how to write alphabets and numbers. Help Mr. Crab gather the numbers in order and draw those alphabets and numbers.

The alphabet song was my favorite part of this app because it instantly brought back childhood memories. The difference now is instead of tapping really quickly, I can pace my taps and create a different version of the song. It is really cool. It will entertain your child for a long time.

Why does this app deserve a Happy Face?  Toddler Counting & Alphabet - Dinosaurs - Space Machine, Inc.

Toddler Counting & Alphabets - DinosaursToddler Counting & Alphabets by KidSpring Studio available in another theme – Dinosaurs! This app is another variation of the “Pond Life” app with a dinosaur theme designed for children learning their ABCs and 123s. It’s Happy Face approved because this app specifically focuses on the sequencing of alphabet letters and numbers and makes it fun for children to learn. Like the Pond Life version, this app focuses on a specific educational aspect of learning and delivers! The dinosaur theme may even be considered an upgrade by children.

The puzzle images are various dinosaurs and the audio ambiance adds to an engaging experience. Nicely illustrated images of dinosaurs are broken up into strips and given a number or letter, which when put in the correct sequence completes the picture. The picture then grows larger and a congratulatory graphic descends and gives a praising award.

The sound files are nicely recorded with a child’s voice which is great for the younger children to relate to and the background music is pleasant. I should also mention that there is an option in the settings to turn off the background music which can be helpful in some settings. After each image is completed you receive a digital sticker as an additional reward for completing the image puzzle.

The “Dinosaurs” theme is not exactly the same as the Pond Life version as it offers a mode of play designed for lowercase alphabet letters. The menu also offers four modes of play; Uppercase ABCs, Lowercase ABCs, Counting from 1 to 10, and counting from 1 to 20 (double row). There is also a settings screen which can be accessed from the menu. The setting button needs to be pressed and held to unlock it so it’s unlikely a child who can’t yet read would be able to view this screen. On the settings screen there are options to turn off sounds and an interesting option to enter a parent’s email address and the child’s name. This is interesting because when a certain number of image puzzles are completed a special award screen is displayed which is personalized with the child’s name. This can then be saved to the device or emailed to the parent’s email account where the parent can then print out a hard copy version of the graphic award.

Once again, this app is well constructed and will truly help children learn. At the time of this review the app sells for $1.99 and is compatible for the iPad and iPad2. It’s well worth the price if you have a toddler learning ABCs and 123s. There are a lot of apps developed for learning ABCs and 123s, but Toddler Counting & Alphabets does have a unique aspect in the sense that it does very well at targeting the sequencing aspect of learning which is one step beyond the recognition of the letter or number characters. Like its counterpart (Pond Life) this app deserves a Happy Face!

Why does this app deserve a Happy Face?  Toddler Counting & Alphabet - Pond Life - Space Machine, Inc.

Toddler Counting & Alphabets - Pond LifeToddler Counting & Alphabets by KidSpring Studio is a wonderful app for children learning their ABCs and 123s. It’s Happy Face approved because this app specifically focuses on the sequencing of alphabet letters and numbers and offers rich entertainment for children as they learn. This app focuses on a specific educational aspect of learning and delivers! And does it well I may add.

The “Pond Life” theme is a playful theme which will enlighten any child’s day. The puzzle images are set to characters which would be found in or around a pond and the audio ambiance adds to the engaging experience. Nicely illustrated images of animals and insects are broken up into strips and given a number or letter, which when put in the correct sequence completes the picture. The picture then grows larger and a congratulatory graphic descends and gives a praising award.

The sound files are nicely recorded with a child’s voice which is great for the younger children to relate to. After each image is completed you receive a digital sticker as an additional reward for completing the image puzzle.

The menu offers four modes of play; Uppercase ABCs, Counting from 1 to 10, and two variations of counting from 1 to 20 (a single row of 20 pcs and a double row with 10 pcs).

All in all, this app is well constructed and will truly help children learn (which is most important in my mind). For that alone, this app deserves a Happy Face, but with the added production value this app is a clear winner.
